Configure the location of your device to find it more easily if you lost it or if it was stolen by the Find my iPhone feature enable.
Before it is free and available on all iOS devices, the Find my iPhone feature was paid, until the arrival of iOS 4.2 in 2010. It was part of the MobileMe service, the ancestor of iCloud, which was billed at the time almost 80 euros per year.
Since then, Find my iPhone has come a long way. The feature integrated natively on all Apple devices is usable for free by all and allows, in addition, to locate the device, ring it remotely, or erase all data.
To never be caught off guard and take the right actions quickly, here is a short summary to learn how to configure and use Find my iPhone.
1Enable Find My iPhone On Your Device
If the feature is not already enabled on your Phone, open the settings, enter your Apple ID, and then go to the iCloud menu.
Scroll through the options and, in the apps using iCloud section, enter Find my iPhone. Make sure that the Find my iPhone and send last position options are enabled.
2Find A Lost Or Stolen Phone
When your Phone is lost, you can locate it very easily in several ways: either from the find my iPhone app, installed on another Apple device, or by connecting directly to your iCloud account from a Web browser.
To find your device and display its position on a map, go to icloud.com. Sign in to your iCloud account using your username and password and click Find my iPhone.
The geographical position of your device, modeled by a green dot, should appear instantly on the map.
3Ring Your Phone Remotely
If you think you have lost your device in your home, you can ring it remotely to help you find it. From the iCloud interface, expand the All My Devices menu and click on your Phone.
In the pop-up that appears, click ring. A ringtone should then sound instantly on your device, provided it is not in silent mode.
4Lock Your iPhone
In case your Phone is lost, it is possible to completely lock the access and display a message on the screen of it.
To do this, click lost mode in your Phone window displayed on iCloud. Enter a phone number and click Next.
The following window prompts you, if you wish, to customize the message that will be displayed on the device screen. Then click Finish to lock your iPhone remotely.
5Erase The Contents Of Your Device
If you are worried that you will never be able to recover your device, it is quite possible to erase all of its contents from iCloud.
To do this, in the activity window of your device displayed on the map, click Erase iPhone. An alert message asking you to confirm the action is displayed. If you are sure you will never be able to recover your device, confirm the deletion of the data it contains by clicking clear.
Note that once erased, your iPhone will not be able to locate or be tracked on the map.
